I’m a student, under 21, and I volunteered to donate my eggs this year. I’m aware that there are many people my age who are less mature and wouldn’t be able to deal with something like this - but I feel like they wouldn’t be likely to volunteer to do it anyway. So I think it is fine for someone under 21 to volunteer to donate.
But, despite this, I was told that the hospital would be uncomfortable putting me through the procedure, and that I would have to wait ’til I’m older to donate my eggs. I do feel like this had something to do with my age. So, though I would say that a young donor should be allowed to make these sorts of decisions, you can’t force doctors into doing something they’re uncomfortable doing. If it is a shared opinion of doctors that they would not be comfortale putting someone under 21 through the procedure, then it would probably be sensible to change the age of donors from 18-35 to 21-35 to save others from disappointment.
