Egg donation - the gift of parenthood

An innovative scheme to help infertile couples through egg donation hopes to improve the experience and success rate for women by matching them anonymously one-to-one.

Altrui, an organisation that seeks and supports altruistic egg donors and matches them with women who are unable to conceive, says it expects success rates of 60 to 70% by matching each donor to a single recipient rather than sharing the donor’s eggs with several women as is usually done in the UK.

Alison Bagshawe, founder of Altrui and a fertility professional who has worked in the industry for 20 years, said one-to-one donation was in the donor’s best interest.

“Connecting a donor with a single recipient gives the best chance of success and it also means excess embryos can be frozen to give the opportunity for another cycle in the future and the chance of a genetic sibling.” said Alison.

Alison said donors who were anonymously matched to one woman, rather than having their eggs used to help a number of women, found the experience particularly rewarding. Knowing what this gift means to both sides makes the whole process and reasons for doing it worthwhile and highly personal despite not knowing who the other is.

“The welfare of our donors is massively important to us, and we give great consideration for their wellbeing throughout. By offering such a personal service we can ensure the best experience for the donor and the best possible outcome for the recipient.”
