Egg donation > Types of egg donation

Are there different types of egg donation?

Yes there are a number of ways to donate eggs, and they are:

Anonymous egg donation with Altrui

As the name suggests, you would remain anonymous (unknown) to the people who need your help (the egg recipients).

When many couples place an advertisement to find a donor, both they and the egg donor with whom they are matched choose to remain anonymous. Donating your eggs in this way allows you to give another couple a wonderful, life-changing gift, but without any of the risks or long-term implications that go with knowing the other people involved.

Anonymous egg donation is only possible when done through a third party, such as Altrui. Our experienced and knowledgeable team are not only there to act as the ‘middlemen’ between donor and recipient, we are also able to offer you all the advice and guidance you need, and to ensure that you receive plenty of support and care every step of the way.

‘Known’ egg donation to someone you know

A known egg donor is someone who is known directly, or indirectly, by the recipients; they are usually a friend or a relative who has donated their eggs specifically to them. However many people do not have family that they can ask, nor other people who they feel they can approach.

Egg sharing through most UK centres

What many people think of as egg donation is, in reality, egg sharing – the most common form of egg donation available in the UK and abroad. Egg sharing works when a woman who needs IVF treatment herself, is prepared to donate some of her eggs to another couple in exchange for help with the treatment costs. Unfortunately this does not give the egg recipients the best chance of getting pregnant.

While some other clinics will share the donated eggs from an altruistic egg donor between two or more women, at Altrui we operate an exclusive one-to-one donation policy, whereby the eggs that you have so kindly donated will only be given to one woman.
